Mindset and Strategies of a Top Realtor

Writer's picture: Dan PlowmanDan Plowman

I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Mark Faris on The Full Out Real Estate Agent podcast, and what a conversation it was! We covered everything from my early days in real estate to the strategies that have helped me stay at the top of the game for over 35 years.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to watch the full podcast (embedded below), but I wanted to take a moment to share some of the key takeaways and tips we discussed. These lessons have shaped my career, and I hope they can do the same for you.

Key Takeaways from the Podcast

  1. Hard Work Will Always Set You Apart When I started in real estate back in 1989, the market was tough. Interest rates were sky-high, and competition was fierce. But I quickly realized that if I worked harder than everyone else—more open houses, more calls, more signs—I could outlast the challenges. Success starts with showing up and putting in the effort, every single day.

  2. Shift Your Mindset to See Opportunities Challenges are part of the business, but they’re also opportunities in disguise. One of my earliest lessons came when a client called me, upset about issues they discovered after moving in. Instead of walking away, I solved the problem—paying for a cleanup service and a new dishwasher. That simple act turned them into lifelong advocates for me, bringing in multiple referrals. Problems are opportunities waiting to be discovered.

  3. Focus on Conversations, Not Transactions Real estate is a people business. Whether it’s at an open house, during a phone call, or even while pumping gas, focus on building genuine connections. If you can have five meaningful conversations a day, you’ll see your business grow exponentially. It’s not just about selling—it’s about connecting.

  4. Track Your Time and Activities Time is your most valuable resource. I recommend tracking your day in 15-minute increments for two weeks. Highlight the activities that bring you closer to your goals (green) and identify the "time bandits" that steal your focus (red). This simple exercise was a game-changer for me and can help you focus on what truly matters.

  5. Never Stop Learning One of the best decisions I made was surrounding myself with top producers early in my career. Learning from those who were ahead of me opened my eyes to new possibilities and pushed me to improve. Even today, I’m constantly learning, adapting, and improving.

Final Thoughts

This business can give you the life you’ve always dreamed of—but only if you’re willing to put in the work and embrace growth. Shift your mindset, double down on effort, and never give up.
